In fashion, colour is often the first thing to catch the eye. Yet texture is what holds our attention. A monochrome design can still create drama when it incorporates richly tactile surfaces. Chunky knits feel warm and powerful. Lace conveys delicacy and femininity. Glossy leather looks sharp and modern, while feathers and fringe bring movement to every step.

Choose one defining texture

Make one piece with a striking surface the focal point. Here, the chunky oversized knit does almost all the visual work. Everything else needs only a clean silhouette and a restrained black palette.

This is one of the easiest styling principles to apply: let one texture speak and allow the rest to provide a backdrop. A chunky knit can be paired with wide-leg trousers. A feathered skirt works with a simple tank top. A glossy leather coat looks more convincing alongside matte, minimally detailed pieces.

Create contrast instead of perfect coordination

Lace is often associated with romance, but strong shoulders and delicate glasses give it a more intellectual, decisive character. Muted mustard and olive tones keep the lace-on-lace combination from feeling overly sweet or demure.

Contrast gives an outfit depth: softness against structure, matte beside shine, and a rough surface balanced by precise tailoring. When these opposing elements stay within a cohesive palette, the result feels harmonious without becoming monotonous.

Use texture to shape the silhouette

Texture does more than decorate a surface; it can also transform the apparent shape of the body. Layers of fuzzy fringe add volume to the upper half. By contrast, the cascading strands of the white top draw the eye vertically, elongating the figure and giving it graceful movement.

When wearing a voluminous piece, keep the rest of the look close to the body or clearly defined. This play between generous and narrow proportions prevents the figure from being overwhelmed. It is why stylists often pair an elaborate top with leggings, a pencil skirt or sculptural boots.

Use colour to emphasise structure

Yellow at the waist, turquoise on the legs and black across the body form clearly defined blocks. This colour-blocking accentuates the outfit’s hourglass construction. The bright waist becomes the focal point, while the voluminous skirt and tall boots create balance.

On sculptural designs, blocks of colour can help define the silhouette. Two or three are enough. Choose one as the focal point and let the others establish proportion.

Glossy surfaces need room to breathe

Glossy embossed leather naturally commands attention. An oversized cut and broad lapels amplify its sense of power. When a piece combines shine, texture and volume, accessories should be kept to a minimum.

The open neckline, naturally flowing hair and white background allow the coat to take centre stage. The same formula works with a glossy leather jacket, vinyl skirt or patent boots. Pair them with cotton, fine knits or matte denim to balance the shine.

Exercise restraint with feathers

Feathers always suggest a sense of occasion, yet they do not need to be accompanied by sequins or glittering jewellery. Feathered edging softens the classic A-line shape of the black dress. Meanwhile, the gently swaying yellow skirt becomes a striking focal point when paired with a minimalist white top.

Placement matters. Feathers at the hem create movement, while a generous expanse of them makes a statement about personality. Keep the rest of the outfit restrained so that opulence never becomes excessive.

Monochrome does not mean muted

Ruffles create shifting areas of light and shadow across the black dress. Every movement alters its surface, bringing the monochrome design to life. It is an effective way to wear black, white or neutral tones without introducing a print.

When dressing in a single colour, combine at least two contrasting surfaces: smooth with fluffy, matte with glossy, or structured with fluid. Subtle differences in texture can take the place of colour.

Ultimately, texture can help shape the wearer’s image. The more character an outfit has, the clearer its styling should be: one focal point, one dominant proportion and enough visual space for every detail to be seen.
